That is certainly true for modern-world era wars ... in most, if not all, cases those that instigate wars neither themselves nor the members of their families directly fought in battles. However, in older times, certainly, in the times of Genghis Khan or Vlad the Impaler, they led their armies themselves and their sons were members of their armies as a matter of pride and honour.
