I think most who write started to either please themselves or, to put it another way, satisfy the deeply felt need to do so. I agree that agents, editors and publishers first priority is to make money and money indeed sucks … still, just like those writers of hundred years ago, seeing one’s book on a shelf means far more than money and/or fame. For those whose roads are paved with words, it represents the acknowledgment that they have lived.
